SERGEANT’S SESSION – $71.40
TWO MINUTE TALK – Dale Prebble Trip to Africa – Not the usual safari trip instead he went to Rwanda where thousands were slaughtered in genocide. Their guide spoke freely about the atrocities in their past and that they are now in a period of reconciliation, cleaning up their towns and rebuilding. One could not help to be inspired by the changes led by forgiveness. Mantra ‘don’t bear a grudge, forgive’.
GUEST SPEAKER –
Stuart was a Past District Governor of District 9910 from 1991-92. The Rotary Theme then was ‘Look Beyond Yourself’. This inspired Grant to continue his good work and is the Executive Director of Rotary New Zealand World Community Service, a limited company.
Their work is Humanitarian Response and Stuart talked about and showed slides of the work they do particularly in the Pacific. They provide Emergency Response Kits made possible by club contributions. These kits are made up in NZ for emergencies like cyclones, flooding and tsunamis in the Pacific Islands. The kits cost $600 and are easily dispatched. 5588 kits have been delivered since 2007. They also handle donations in kind like desks for schools, mattresses and clothing.
A lot of their work is supporting communities and helping them to rebuild following disasters. They rebuild houses for teachers, support families with disabled children, improve the infrastructure by providing new ambulances, house the homeless, improve water and sanitation and give sight to the blind through cataract surgery. Their focus is on health and education especially in Vanuatu and Fiji. As Stuart says, “It’s not about us, it’s about them”.
