GUEST SPEAKER – Tony Fitzgerald – Child Cancer.
Tony has built a career in Sales and Marketing. The Child Cancer Foundation is his second foray into the fundraising world following a successful stint as the Fundraising and Marketing Manager with Wellington Free Ambulance.
The Child Cancer Foundation started fundraising for cancer in children in 1978 and specialised their support to help children and their families physically, emotionally and financially.
Often a child will start with something quite minor but it escalates to a major drama with one or both parents likely to give up work and the sick child becomes centre of the universe. Often the child needs to go to Auckland for treatment and the Foundation supports the family to keep them together.
They assist with flights, holiday homes, camps for the siblings and this help continues well after the treatment finishes. They provide the Beads of Hope for courage during their treatment. The average cost to provide this support for the child and their family is ten to twelve thousand dollars per annum and on an average lasts for up to three years. They are funded from fundraising and from trusts and grants.
To finish Tony showed a heart wrenching video ‘Matilda’s Story’ about the effect cancer had on her and her family.

Country2Coast was held in favourable conditions on Sunday 28 April. Thanks to the organising committee funds raised from this event will help local projects including our major sponsorship to the local Voluntary Fire Brigades
Lyn Hann gave us an update on C2C and thanked Kevin Longman for the documentation he provided and to the organising team and everyone for the help he received in running the event. It showed the strength of the club and everyone played their part on the day.
Dale Prebble said a candidate had been put forward for the Outward Bound – mind, body and soul course. Unfortunately a place was not available and the person has been put on the wait list.
