PRESIDENTIAL CITATION WITH GOLD DISTINCTION
Presidential Citation: Assistant Governor Ken Haines, representing our 2018/19 District Governor Graeme Jull, presented our 2018/19 President John Pollard with a Rotary International Presidential Citation, with Gold Distinction. In congratulating John and our club, Ken explained that we were one of only three clubs in District 9930 to be awarded the Citation. Ken further explained that David Smith was given a special mention for forwarding all the necessary information required. In accepting the Citation John thanked the club for support and said that he found it particularly pleasing that we were already doing the various activities which contributed to the award.
Background Information: Barry Rassin, the President of Rotary International for 2018-2019 Rotary Year asked all club Presidents to select goals, from a list of 19, for their clubs to achieve during that year.
Achievement of 10 of these goals would earn a Presidential Citation. Achievement of up to 3 additional goals would earn a Presidential Citation with Distinction.
In John Pollard’s year as President, many other goals were achieved, several of which were far more significant than those in the list below.
The Goals set by the President of Rotary International, that we achieved are as follows. The two goals that earned the Gold Distinction have been marked with asterisks.
Our current Rotary International President, Mark Daniel Maloney, has set a total of 22 goals for this Rotary Year – 10 of which must be achieved to gain a Citation.
The business of the Club Assembly was to appoint the Nominating Committee for the 2020/21 year. Elected members are Trish Giddens, Peter Mayne, Jessica Dufty, John Pollard and Stephen Randal.

ANNIVERSARIES 22 October – 4 November
Past member Graham Clare passed away last Wednesday 16 October. A service for Graham will be held at the Havelock North Function Centre on Thursday 24 October at 2.00 pm. Our thoughts are with his son John and his family at this very sad time.
Handbook: Trish handed out our club handbook for 2019/20 and particularly asked that members note details of duties, some of which have changed recently. Additional handbooks are available for collection by members not present tonight.
Dementia Hawkes Bay: Last week’s guest speaker Alister Robertson has asked for feedback on his presentation – too much or not enough on any/all of the topics? Also, Dementia Hawkes Bay is looking for volunteers to help at its facility, Chatham Club. Volunteers can be on a casual or specific days/times per week basis, to help with activities such as driving vans to pick up members, gardening, assisting with numerous other activities, etc. Please contact Julie Cummings on 021 1677552 if able to help.
Science and Technology Forum: Dale Prebble advised for this year’s forum we’ve successfully nominated two boys from Havelock North High School and one girl from Woodford.
Rotary’s World Polio Day Thursday 24 October
Mark your calendar to join us on 24 October for Rotary’s World Polio Day Online Global Update. It will be streamed on RI’s Facebook pages in multiple languages and time zones around the world.
World Polio Day is an annual opportunity for Rotary members to rally the world around the fight to eradicate the disease forever. This year’s program will highlight the heroes of polio eradication, with stories from areas that have recently been affected and areas where polio is still endemic.
The program features TV presenter and former Paralympian Ade Adepitan, supermodel Isabeli Fontana, science educator Bill Nye, and actress Archie Panjabi. Our partners at the World Health Organization and UNICEF will provide updates on the latest progress toward a polio-free world.
In 1988, when Rotary and its partners founded the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, the paralyzing disease affected 350,000 children. Our collaboration with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and later the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, local health workers, and national governments has helped reduce that number by 99.9 percent.
Thanks to Stephen Randal, David Smith and John Pollard for taking notes for this bulletin and supplying the photos.
The opinions expressed in this bulletin are not necessarily those of the President or Directors or of members of the Rotary Club of Havelock North Inc.
