ROTARY MEETING: 20-May-2019
ATTENDANCE – 24 including two guests – our guest speaker Mel Humphries and Trish’s exchange student from Brazil, Gabrielle.
TWO MINUTE TALK –
Lyn Hann continued his talk on learning to fly and covered his training of flying in white-out conditions using instruments.
GUEST SPEAKER – Mel Humphries
Sergeant Mel Humphries originally from Hamilton, is the officer in charge of the Waipukurau Police Station.
Mel talked about the way police respond to domestic violence situations. Mel has a personal understanding of this as prior to joining the police she experienced abuse in a violent relationship. She was involved with the publication of a book on domestic violence entitled ‘Stand by me‘.
Mel was asked to be the keynote speaker at the launch of this book which drew on her experiences and the help she received from Women’s Refuge especially Te Whakaruruhau.
Now in the Police, Mel has been influential in how they deal with family harm and how they work in collaboration with other support groups like women’s refuge.
As a police sergeant, she can relate to these people from a Police perspective and how they treat abuse victims with respect, integrity and commitment.
From a personal perspective, women’s refuge helped her get her life back on track and gave her the courage and support to leave the situation she was in.
Mel is now happily married to her husband John, who is presently serving in the army in the Middle East. They met while serving in East Timor and learned so many good values from the people there.
The the book ‘Stand by me‘ can be ordered online through Te Whakaruruhau at www.waikatowomensrefuge.co.nz or through Wheeler’s Bookshop at www.wheelers.co.nz.
