MAY IS YOUTH SERVICE MONTH.
NEXT MEETING 20 May – Speaker Sergeant Mel Humphries – Domestic Violence
ROTARY MEETING 13-May-2019
ATTENDANCE – 22 members
SERGEANT’S SESSION – $60.60
TWO MINUTE TALK –
Ian Ellengold said that this August will be the 48th anniversary of his move to New Zealand from the United Kingdom. Although he has been back and forth to the UK over the years he says he is ‘staying put’. The one thing he does miss however is the history and the reminders of this, seeing the old remains of Roman History, Colchester ruins, Bath Spa bath, Tower of London and Hadrian’s Wall to name a few.
New Zealand is a young country relatively speaking and the one thing we can learn from history is we don’t make the same mistakes of the past.
GUEST SPEAKER –
Speaker Grant Miller, new member’s introductory talk
Grant who is married to Julie spoke about their family, two sons Wade and Lachie both into their canoe polo and daughter Kendyll who is into equestrian eventing.
Grant and Julie are avid collectors and Grant posed us with the question – are they hoarders or collectors? From the PowerPoint presentation, it was plain to see that they were collectors of some very fine items of special character and value. One of the collections he showed was his collection of intricately crafted paperweights.
Grant’s motto which he learned from his grandparents were to ‘Buy it once, buy it well’.

Country2Coast – Lyn Hann and President John lead a discussion on the recently held Country2Coast event and what were the concerns and improvements that we could focus on and change in the future. Some of the things discussed included;
Bus numbers and times
Distance markers perhaps need to bigger with the signs further apart.
Need to attract more competitors, does the date conflict with the holidays and other events?
There could be more to do at the finish line i.e. more hype, sausage sizzle to encourage to stay on after their race.
The need to encourage more families and more kids to take part – even to enter school teams.
Need to recognise the sponsors more.
Lyn would like more feedback about the event from members, please send him an email with your suggestions.
President John encouraged members to attend the District Conference next year in Rotorua 22-24 May as it will be our responsibility to help organise the District Conference in 2021. This will be another chance for our club to give its full participation to a special project.
