The Motto of Rotary – “Service before Self”.
Rotary International is an international service organization whose stated human rights purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and to advance goodwill and peace around the world. It is a secular organization open to all people regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, or political preference.
There are 34,282 member clubs worldwide. 1.2 million individuals called Rotarians have joined these clubs.
The object of Rotary is to encourage & foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and in particular, to encourage and foster:
The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.
High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
This objective is set against the “Rotary 4-way Test,” used to see if a planned action is compatible with the Rotarian spirit.
The 4-Way Test considers the following questions in respect to thinking, saying or doing:
Is it the truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Rotarians are men and women from all walks of life, occupations, cultures, religions and ages. We help people in need, we support young people, we assist organizations and we are assisting in the eradication of polio from the world.
Rotary Havelock North provides the structure for members to get involved in local, national and international projects. It also provides you with the opportunity of meeting and developing long term friendships with really nice people. We have a lot of fun!
If you would like to know more about Rotary, and our Rotary Club in particular, please contact us. We will be very happy to host you as a guest at one of our meetings.
Rotary Havelock North meet at the Havelock North Community Centre, Te Mata Road at 5.30pm every Monday night.
The meeting starts with the opportunity to mix and mingle with all members and guests for half an hour.
At 6:00 pm the meeting is called to order and all guests are introduced.
A light meal is served (members pay $19.50) followed by tea/coffee.
Around 6:30 the more formal part of the meeting starts.
There is often a 2 minute talk (from a member) on any subject they are interested in.
Next a Sergeant session. The Sergeant’s task is to find a reasonable cause to “fine” individuals or groups to raise funds for club purposes. The funds raised are distributed to people or groups for specific purposes. For example, buy a saddle for a horse for riding for the disabled or similar.
Next on the agenda is often a guest speaker. The subject is often related to local groups who need help with their activities, personnel or funds. We often help with personnel or funds where a specific activity is needed.
Meetings finish around 7:30 pm
Local Community Assistance
Our motto is “Service Before Self“. If our club is presented with a request for assistance (labour or goods) and it is deemed appropriate we will endeavor to assist. Recent examples are: assisting with traffic flows for sporting events, removing weeds from Kiwi Pens and helping repair the paths, creating a garden plot for a school, running our Christmas raffle to generate funds for local and international uses.
