Rotary Bulletin- 7 September 2020 – Meeting
Next meeting at 5.30 pm on Monday 14 September
Attendance: 25 members and speaker.
Sergeant’s session: $52.70
Toast: Dale Prebble
TWO-MINUTE TALK – Charlie Fergus gave us some inside information on the tendering and gaining of “shovel” jobs around Hawkes Bay. It was great to see that the council are insisting on the companies employing youth workers, unemployed and those recently affected by the Covid-19 situation. The training situation sounded promising and the case study about the mentoring of a young person was heartening.
GUEST SPEAKER – It was great to have Kirstin Monk speak to us. Kirstin is a local lawyer and has a practice called Bay Legal in Hastings. Kirstin has been practising Law since 1997 and furnished us with background information on the workings of the Youth Court. The Youth Court is operated under the Oranga Tamariki Act (previously named the Children, Young Persons and Their Families Act) which was legislated in 1989. This act was a brave introduction and showed how NZ valued its ability to not just punish youth but to rehabilitate and provide a better system for both the victims and the offenders. She was a passionate speaker and is obviously very keen to see young offenders offered a second chance after making a “dumb” decision.
Meeting next week As this speaker has an alternative viewpoint to our previous speaker on the “End of Life” Bill, partners may like to come along and hear her speak before they have their vote.

Over recent weeks I have found out that we have a club calendar on our website page. Eddie updates this with speakers as he confirms them and it has all the holidays on it as well. I realised the other night that I wasn’t the only one who was unaware of this. So….. if you haven’t accessed it you can find it here And if you are really smart apparently you can link it to your google calendar and the information will automatically appear on your own calendar (assuming it is a google one), David Smith or Dave Norrie may be able to help you with this. This is what it looks like.
