ZOOM MEETING HELD 15th JUNE
Attendance 30 including our Guest Speaker Sir Don McKinnon, Raeanne Smith and Jane Thompson.
Thought of the Day John Pollard reflected on a book he has read ‘Notes on a Nervous Planet’ by Matt Haig and how relevant it is to help understand some of the issues we are presently experiencing in the world.
Two Minute Talk District Governor-Elect Grant Spackman shared his experiences attending the Rotary International Assembly in San Diego, California. He attended an assembly with 540 District Governor Elects together with RI staff, a total of about 1500 which was held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. Incoming World President Holger Knaack, of the Rotary Club of Herzgotum Lauenburg – Molin, Germany promoted his theme ‘Rotary Opens Opportunities’. Grant and Wendy found the whole experience amazing and very inspiring. Prior to the assembly, they had a homestay in Florida to meet people before attending the assembly. Their hosts were wonderful and took them to Cape Canaveral and Disney World in Florida.
Guest Speaker – Members were treated to a very interesting and topical talk by Sir Don McKinnon, one time NZ Deputy Prime Minister and longest-serving Foreign Minister and formerly the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations. Sir Don is also the Chair of the New Zealand China Council and Chair of Brain Research NZ, Chair of Aspen NZ and the New Zealand War Memorial Trust-Le Quesnoy.
Sir Don expressed thoughts relevant to the day and for New Zealand following Covid-19. We need to take Covid-19 seriously and need to get ahead of the infections. It is clear that the world is divided by those whose leaders listen to science and those whose autocratic leadership know best. The results speak for themselves. He spoke about the relevance of the United Nations and the roles many UN Organisations play and about trade. Sir Don was made a Paul Harris Fellow in 1998 and spoke about his admiration for Rotary and the very important place we have in civilisation.
