David Smith talked about the article in the Rotary Foundation Newsletter
For Havelock North Rotary, “FACES” stands for Facial Prosthetics with 3D Printing, and the name given to an amazing project their club is undertaking through a Rotary Foundation Global Grant. They are joined by their Brazilian partner, the Rotary Club of Jahu-Leste (Sao Paulo), along with support from District 9930 and our partner in Brazil, District 4480. Back in April 2019, Havelock North Rotarians were hosted by Jahu-Leste Rotarians through a Rotary Friendship Exchange. The Brazilian Rotarians introduced them to a hi-tech solution for creating facial prosthetics by using a 3D printer. This modern technology wonder makes it possible for people who have severe facial disfigurement from radical cancer surgery to restore their dignity and integrate back into society. Seeing the substantial need for this procedure in serving mostly poor patients in Sao Paulo State, a Global Grant application was initiated.
The total FACES project budget is US$30,000 of which US$15,000 will come from a Rotary Foundation Global Grant. In addition, our district has pledged US$4,000 from our District Designated Funds (also part of The Rotary Foundation). The Havelock North and Jahu-Leste clubs have also pledged donations. The project will be overseen by the Amaral Carvalho Hospital.
Havelock North Rotarian, David Smith, is coordinating the Global Grant along with his Brazilian counter-part Paulo Oliveira from Jahu-Leste Rotary.
